WRONG MOTIVES OF BELIEVING
Updated: Aug 18
Why do people believe in God? There are many reasons why people believe in God. Some people believe in God because they want God to bless their lives. They believe that God can make their lives prosperous, especially in their businesses, careers, and schools. Their expectation of God is that if they go to church every Sunday, pray specific prayers, and perform certain religious rituals, God would give them favors and give the desires of their hearts. However, this reason for believing in God is not biblical.
There was a man who wanted to become successful and wealthy because he wants to prove to his family and friends that he was somebody. He came from a very religious family, so he learned at a very young age that if you go to church every Sunday, perform the religious rituals, and be kind to others, God would bless his life. So he worked hard and became very religious. However, one day, he got into a serious car accident. This accident changed his life forever. He lost his job because of his injuries, and it took him for a long time to recover and went to tough rehabilitation. While he was in recovery, he became bitter against God. He thought to himself that God was not fair because if God was fair, then why did He allowed the accident to happen in his life, after all the good things that he had done.
It seems that God is not fair to this man's life, but God functions differently than what we think of Him. We need to understand that it is the wrong reason to believe in God because of His blessings. This man lost his faith in God because he had a false understanding of God. God wants us to believe in Him as our God, who would rule and guide our lives. God indeed blesses those who believe in Him, but His blessings are always according to His purpose and plan in our lives. When we believe in Him, we are surrendering our lives to Him. And as we surrender our lives to Him, He then blesses and guides our lives.
Ask yourself these questions: what does it mean to believe in God honestly? Do I have the same understanding of God as the man in the story? If yes, then what is the correct understanding of God?
Write down all the worries that you are facing today and lift them up to God.
Father in Heaven, I pray that you will continue to show me what it means to believe in you. Please help me not to believe in you for the wrong reasons. I surrender my life to you. Please help me now with (mention your prayer requests). In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
