Trusting in God can be a challenge, particularly if we've grown accustomed to relying on our own abilities, possessions, and wisdom for salvation. As Jesus expressed in Matthew 19:23-26, 'I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I'll say it again—it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God! The disciples were astounded. 'Then who in the world can be saved?' they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said, 'Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God, everything is possible.' Jesus's message here is clear: the attachment to wealth and possessions can make it difficult for the wealthy to trust in God. The rich person may believe they can trust in their own resources, but Jesus's words challenge this false belief. Wealth and possessions are all blessings from the Lord, but they become a snare or trap to us when they become our everything, especially when we trust in them instead of God. Only by trusting in God we can be saved, and not through our wealth or possessions.
We may not have wealth or great possessions, but we can replace wealth and possessions with our accomplishments, strengths, and wisdom. Anything that we trust over our God becomes a trap for us. If we are struggling to trust in the Lord, we need to continually ask God to teach and help us to trust Him. God wants us to grow in our trust in Him. Let us examine our hearts today and find out where we really put our trust. Do we trust in our income, job, education, business, retirement, etc? Everything that we have comes from the Lord. Our jobs, possessions, and our very existence come from Him. God wants us to trust him completely with our future, for everything that we have can be gone tomorrow. The more we trust and hold on to the things of this world, the more we worry. But the more we trust in God, the more we have peace and joy in our hearts, a reassurance that He is in control and will provide for us.
Trusting God is freeing to our souls because when we trust God, we let Him take care of us. Let us stop trusting ourselves and continue to trust in our God day by day. This trust brings a sense of security and freedom, knowing that we are in His loving and capable hands.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Do I trust God more than anything in this world, including myself? Why is it a trap for me to trust in anything other than God? What is the benefit of completely trusting in God?
Write down all the worries you face today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, would you please teach and help me to trust you completely? As you said in your Word, everything in this world can be gone in an instant because of the result of sin. Do not let my heart trust the things in this world but you alone. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
