It is interesting that Jesus used the anatomy of a plant to illustrate our relationship with Him. Jesus is the vine, which supports the entire plant. The vine is attached to the root so that it can get all the nutrients and minerals from the soil, and it distributes all of them to the branches and leaves. If any branch or leaf falls off of the vine, it will wither away.
In the same manner, we are the branches that are attached to the vine. Jesus is the sustainer of our lives. He is the one that supports and helps us to grow in our relationship with Him. He is the one that is making us to become more like him day by day. However, just as the branch cannot live on its own, we too cannot live on our own. The word “abide” in the verse means to remain in Him. To remain in Him means to walk with Him continually. Every day we must walk with Him in order for us to grow in our relationship with Him. We need to spend time with Him daily in our prayer and His word. Our Lord Jesus wants our daily connection with Him. He does not want us to come to Him only when we need His help. Our God is personal, and He wants to pour His love on us.
It is sad when we do not connect with Him because we are too busy in our lives. We are afraid that if we spend time with the Lord, we will not have time to finish our school works or responsibilities. If we genuinely believe that Jesus is our Lord and that He is the sustainer of our lives, then we need to make every effort to spend time with Him in order for us to bear fruit. If we don’t have the desire to spend time with Him, but we want to, then we need to ask the Lord to help us to spend time with Him. We can only walk so far without Him. His ways are much better than this world can offer. We need to continue to walk with Him daily by spending time with Him in prayer and His Word, and never neglect our fellowship or going to church because those are the places that we can be encouraged to walk with Him.
Ask yourself these questions: What does it mean to abide in the Lord? Why is it important for me to walk with the Lord daily?
Write down the challenges that you are facing today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Father in Heaven, thank you that you are the sustainer of my life. I do not need to worry about tomorrow because you will always be there for me. Please help me to spend time with you. Please help me with (mention your prayer requests). In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
