One thing you will notice when studying the Book of Psalms is that many of the Psalms were written by David during his struggles. David wrote many Psalms under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to express his struggles and faith. Psalms, like any other music, express emotions, and this is the reason we love music so much. We can express our emotions through music. We love to listen to music that we can relate to. We listen to songs that make us fall in love, make us dance, make us sing, make us happy, sad, or angry. But the most important songs to listen to are the songs that help us worship and praise God. God created music for us so that we can express our emotions, faith, and love towards Him. In other words, God created music for His glory. However, Satan distorted music and turned it into ungodly songs. The songs nowadays are filled with hate, sex, materialism, self, and violence. Colossians 3:1-2 says, "Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God's right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth."
One way to think about the things of heaven is to listen to Christian music. If we want to focus our attention on God all day long, we can listen to Christian music. We can turn the radios in our cars to Christian stations. One way that Christian music helps my relationship with God is that when I am discouraged or struggling, God uses Christian music to lift my spirit up. When our mind is overwhelmed with the things that are going on around us, we can relax and rest in God's presence by listening to Christian music. When we listen to godly songs, it triggers our faith in God. We begin to focus on God instead of our problems. We start seeing our problems through our faith in our Lord Jesus. If we worry a lot, I want to encourage us to listen to Christian music more and let the Holy Spirit use the songs to encourage us.
David wrote many songs to God to align his heart and mind with God. Through writing Psalms and singing them to God, he endured battles, failures, and all kinds of struggles in his life. So, let us keep on listening to Christian music that uplifts our spirits to God.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Why did God give me music? What is the importance of listening to Christian music? How often do I listen to Christian music? Why?
Write down all the worries you face today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for blessing me with Christian music that leads me to worship and praise you. Thank you for the Christian music that you use to encourage me in the midst of my struggles. Please help me to focus my mind on you. Please help me to stop listening to music that does not honor you and listen to music that honors your name. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
