The last part of the Lord's prayer is about temptation. Our Lord Jesus is asking our Father in heaven not to lead us to temptation but deliver us from evil. The word "temptation" means to entice or attract someone to sin. In James 1:13, it says "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone." God does not tempt anyone to sin because it is against His nature. God's desire for us is not to sin but to live in righteousness because that is when He is glorified and honored in our lives.
However, Satan wants to tempt us to sin so that he can ruin our lives. Although Satan uses temptation to attract us to sin or rebel against God's will in our lives, God can use Satan's temptation to accomplish His purpose in our lives. For example, when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, God showed to Satan that Jesus would never give in to any temptation in order to accomplish God's will. In the same manner, God demonstrated Job's faith when Satan brought trials to Job to tempt Him to disregard God in his life.
Satan will always tempt us to rebel against God's will in our lives as long as we live in this world. There is no escaping it because Satan wants to ruin or destroy our lives. However, Jesus promised us that when we are tempted, God will never allow us to be tempted more than we can handle, and He will provide us a way of escape in time of temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13).
So, what should we do when we are being tempted to sin against God? The first thing that we do is to pray, just like what Jesus prayed. Ask our Father for protection against temptation and Satan's deceptions. Secondly, we can share our struggles with someone we trust so that he/she can encourage us and support us to fight the temptations that we are facing.
Ask yourself these questions: What should I do when I am being tempted? What is the reason Satan tempting me to sin against God? Do I have anyone that I can trust to share my struggles so that I can be encouraged to not give in to temptation?
Write down all the worries that you are facing today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Father in heaven, please help me to overcome the temptations that I face every day. Thank you that you are always with me and you promised that you will not allow me to be tempted beyond of what I can handle and that you will always provide an escape in time of temptation. Please help me not to give in to temptations because it will only lead me to guilt and shame. Please help me with (mention your prayer requests). In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
