Keeping the commands of God is about obedience. We follow the ways of God in our lives because we want to obey Him. There are several reasons that people want to obey God. Some people obey God because they want the blessing of God in their lives, and others want to be accepted or proved to God that they are worth saving. However, the motivation that Jesus has in obeying the Father's commands is His love for the Father. Jesus obeyed the Father to die on the cross for our sins, even though it was not easy for Him to do. In fact, He asked the Father if He could bypass the suffering on the cross, but in the end, Jesus said, "not my will, but yours will be done." Jesus obeyed the will of the Father because of His love for Him.
In the same manner, we obey the ways of God in our lives because we love Him. Some times obeying the will of God in our lives are not comfortable, especially when His will is not in line with our will. We want to do something else instead of doing what God wants us to do. It is similar to when our parents tell us something to do in the house, and we do not want to listen. However, we know deep in our hearts that they are right. If we want to please our parents and show our love to them, we must obey them.
God wants us to obey Him because we love Him. Our obedience is the expression of our love for Him and not the reason to get something from Him. When we love God, our natural response will be to obey Him. If you are struggling with loving God in your heart, you can say a simple prayer to God to ask Him to help you to fall in love with Him. Because when you fall in love with Him, you will be able to follow God's will in your life.
Ask yourself these questions: What should be the reason for obeying God in my life? What is the wrong motive for obeying God in my life? What can I do if I do not feel that I love God?
Write down the challenges that you are facing today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Father in Heaven, thank you for teaching me today that my obedience should be the expression of my love for you and not to prove myself or get something from you. Please help me to love you. Change my heart, and thank you for loving me. Please help me with (mention your prayer requests). In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
