JESUS IS BOTH GOD AND MAN

Luke 1:34-35 says,"'Mary asked the angel, 'But how can this happen? I am a virgin.' The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.'" When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she would conceive a son and would name Him Jesus, Mary was confused because she was still a virgin. The angel Gabriel explained to Mary how she would become pregnant with a son. The Holy Spirit would overshadow her. The word overshadow is the same concept as the heavy presence of God that filled the tabernacle, where God's presence dwelt among His people when they were in the desert during Moses' time. God's heavy presence came upon Mary, and the Holy Spirit caused Mary to conceive Jesus in her womb. Since the Holy Spirit caused the conception, Jesus was absolutely holy and did not inherit the sin of Adam. Unlike when we were born, we inherited the sin of Adam, and that is the reason we are born with sin (Romans 5:12). Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus is the Son of God.Â
Jesus has the same qualities of God as God. He is holy. The conception of Jesus was the beginning of the physical redemptive process of God on this earth to save us from our sins. The child in Mary's womb was both God and a human being. The child, Jesus, would be a perfect mediator between God and the human race. As a result, the child is the only hope for the forgiveness of sin. The child is the perfect Savior; thus, the name Jesus describes the person of the child that God would save humankind through Him. We have eternal hope because God came into our world to be our Savior and Lord. Eventually, the child would be born and save us from our sins through His death and resurrection. So no matter what we are going through, we must remember that we have hope because Jesus came as our Savior and Lord.
May the presence of God overwhelm us this Christmas season, not only through the gifts or the presence of our families, but through God Himself. May He comfort and give us peace that surpasses understanding this Christmas season. Â
Questions for application:Â (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.)Â Why is it important to know that Jesus was both God and man? Is there a lesson in today's devotion that God spoke into my heart? What are the practical ways to apply in my life the lesson that God taught me from today's devotion?Â
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, understanding the conception of Jesus in Mary's womb is comforting to me because I recognize that Jesus is both God and man, and He is the perfect Savior and Lord because He can relate to you and to me, as a human being. Thank you, Jesus, for coming into this world as a man that I can relate to, yet you are God at the same time. I praise you for saving me from my sins and giving me eternal hope. In your name, Jesus, I pray, Amen.Â
