Then it happened when Abraham settled in Gerar that he told his wife to lie again about their relationship because of fear that the king of Gerar, Abimelech, would kill him because of her (Genesis 20:11). (Actually, Abraham and Sarah were half-brother and sister. They both have the same father but a different mother (Genesis 20:12)). It was acceptable in their culture at that time, but God forbade the customary marriage later on (Leviticus 18:7-18). So it was when Abimelech took Sarah to become his wife, God appeared to him in a dream not to touch Sarah because she was Abraham's wife.
God had to intervene again to save Abraham and Sarah's marriage. Abimelech listened to God and confronted Abraham for lying to him. This was the second time Abraham tried to save his life through a lie instead of trusting God's promise. It is easy to judge Abraham for repeating the same sin that he had committed before, but we can relate with Abraham with our own struggle with sin. How many times have we sinned the same sin over and over again? There are times that we are so frustrated about ourselves because we keep on repeating the same sin.
However, God's mercy and grace are always available to us because we are His children. Every time we fail and sin, God's forgiveness is always available for us. All we have to do is to confess our sin to Him, and He will be faithful to forgive our sin (1 John 1:9). When we fail and sin, the last thing that we do not want to do is to run away from God. There is always forgiveness in God because He already took care of our sin through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We feel guilty when we sin because it is a natural response for us as His children, but we should not stay in our shame because God's forgiveness is always available.
Write down all the worries that you are facing today and lift them up to God.
Ask yourself these questions: What should I do when I sin the same sin over again? Do I believe that God forgives me when I confess my sin to Him? Does God want me to run away from him when I sin?
Prayer:
Father in heaven, thank you that forgiveness is always available to me. You know everything about me, for there is nothing hidden from you. I confess all my sin to you, and please forgive me. Please help me to accept your forgiveness and not to live in shame anymore. Please continue to change my heart so that I can turn away from sin and protect my heart from sinning today. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
