KNOWING GOD IN OUR HOME

Psalm 78 reminds us of Israel's history from Moses to David. It gives us a picture of the spiritual conditions of the people of Israel and how the Lord worked with them. Formal education during Moses's time was in the home. The parents taught their children the laws of God through the Torah (Genesis to Deuteronomy). Psalm 78:1-8, "O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders. For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they in turn will teach their own children. So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. Then they will not be like their ancestors—stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God."

The parents shared their past experiences with God and encouraged their children to follow God's ways. As a result of their persistence in teaching God to their children, no matter how a generation becomes rebellious, there are always people who stay loyal to God, and they are the ones who preserve their nation's belief in God. Nowadays, many believing parents do not share their experiences with God with their children and let the school or the community teach their children about God. The home must become a place where the children understand God through their parents. However, if the parents are not believers or are not walking with God, the Christian children must share their experiences with God with their parents. We do not have to know a lot of things about the Bible to share our faith in God with others. Our daily experiences with God are enough to let others know about the goodness of God.

One of the ways to share our faith with others is to start by saying, "Let me tell you what God has done in my life today..." Let our children or parents hear what God is doing in our lives so that they may be encouraged to know more about God and be reminded of the ways of God.

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) How did the Israelites learn about God during their time? Why is it important to share our experiences with God in our home? What are the ways to share my experiences with others at my home?

Write down all the worries you face today and lift them up to God.

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for all your goodness. Thank you for your Word and the things you are doing in my life. Please help me to share all the good things you are doing in my life, especially with my family. I pray that we will know your glorious deeds, power, and wonders. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
