GOD IS OUR RESCUE AND PROTECTOR

David wrote Psalm 59 after Saul sent men to watch David's house to kill him. Saul was jealous of David because God was with him and wanted to keep his throne. David could not understand why Saul wanted to kill him. David had never betrayed Saul, and in fact, he was loyal to him. He fought for Saul and killed many Philistines and other enemies. David never wanted to replace him because he believed that Saul was God's anointed king of Israel. Yet, with all the things that he had done, Saul wanted to kill him. Saul sent men to David's house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, his wife, knew what was happening and warned him to leave that evening. So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped that evening (1 Samuel 19). David prayed, "Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me (Psalm 59:1)."

Despite his situation, David never lost hope because of his faith in God. No matter how he faced false accusations and was hunted down to be killed, he never stopped trusting in God. As a result, he had confidence in the midst of his desperate situation. He ended Psalm 59 saying these words, "But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love (Psalm 59:16-17)." Similarly, we need to continue to trust God in all of our situations. Never let our situations overwhelm us, but let our trust in God overwhelm our situations. We must trust in our Lord Jesus and let go of trying to control our situations. Let us walk with God and rely on Him every step of the way.

Trusting God means resting in His power; thus, it gives us confidence and hope that He will take care of us and our situations. Our hope in God leads us to praise Him for his unfailing love for us.

Ask yourself these questions for application: (Think through carefully, meditate on the questions while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) How did David continue to praise God in the midst of his desperate situation? What must I do when I am in a desperate situation? How does my trust in God affect me in my situations?

Write down all the worries you face today and lift them up to God.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, You are my rescue and protector. Please help me to trust in you in the midst of my circumstances. Please do not let my circumstances overwhelm me, but help me overcome my problem with my faith in you so that I may experience your peace and praise your name. I pray all these things in the name of my Lord Jesus. Amen.
