What is the filling of the Holy Spirit means? When the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples like tongues of fire while praying, they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 says, "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (languages) as the Spirit gave them utterance." Many Christians interpret the filling of the Holy Spirit as a cup being filled with water. They claim that the Holy Spirit is like water in our lives, and He eventually drains out from us as we disobey God in our lives. The problem of this interpretation is that the Holy Spirit is not like water, but He is a person, just like our God the Father and God the Son, Jesus Christ. In addition, the Holy Spirit does not leave us the moment we become believers of our Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, our body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own." The Holy Spirit does not leave our body even when we sin, but it grieves Him (Ephesians 4:30).
Filling of the Holy Spirit means to be consumed with His presence in our lives. As we yield or trust our lives entirely to His leading, we become more aware of His presence in our lives. Thus, it controls our minds and hearts. As we let the Holy Spirit controls our lives, we experience His power working in and through us. Our lives start to change. We become more loving, patient, wise, forgiving, peaceful, graceful, etc. We begin to live out the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22). When we ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit, we are asking God to help us surrender or yield our lives to the Holy Spirit so that we can be consumed with His presence in our lives.
When the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, they surrendered their hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit when they were praying. And they were consumed with His presence that He put words in their mouth to speak in different languages. Our Heavenly Father wants us to be filled with the Holy Spirit so that we can experience the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Let us surrender or yield our lives to the Holy Spirit so that we can experience Him in a personal way.
Ask yourself these questions: What is the filling of the Holy Spirit mean? How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?
Write down all the worries that you are facing today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Father in Heaven, thank you for teaching me this morning what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Please help me surrender or yield my life entirely to the Holy Spirit that I may experience His power in and through me and changed me from within. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
