GOD DELIVERS US FROM OUR TROUBLES

Psalms 120 through 134 are specific Psalms that are known as Psalms of Ascent. These are Psalms that the Jews sang as they traveled to Jerusalem for their annual Jewish festivals, such as Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Since the city of Jerusalem sits high in the mountains, every walking trail towards it requires an uphill climb. As the Jews struggled through the uphill trails, they were focusing on the joy, peace, and presence of God as they sang the Psalms of Ascent. Psalm 120:1-2 says, "I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me. Save me, Lord, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues." Although the exact date of Psalm 120's writing is unknown, the context suggests it was composed during a time when enemies were causing trouble through lies, deceit, and threats. In the middle of their troubles, they prayed to God for deliverance, and God answered their prayers. God protected them from their enemies. 

There are times when we may find it challenging to protect ourselves from the deception of others, especially those skilled in manipulation. However, when we pray to God for guidance and discernment, He can help us recognize signs of deception and lies. Since our God is all-knowing and all-present, there is nothing that can escape His presence. As a result, He sees all the motives of the heart, and He knows who is lying or telling the truth. He can also protect and restore us from the consequences of lies that are thrown at us. In 2025, the Federal Trade Commission reported losses of $920 million due to impersonators posing as government agencies, including the IRS, FBI, and Social Security Administration. Victims were deceived by scammers through phone calls and social media. The only way that we can protect ourselves from the lies of the enemies is through prayer. We must pray before we do make big decisions. We must avoid relying on our own understanding or even our basic instinct. We must rely on God by simply asking Him for guidance. 

God is faithful to take care of those who trust in Him. God always listens and answers our prayers according to His purpose and plan in our lives. Psalm 120 reminds us that our God is our ever-present help.

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Why is it important to trust in God over our own understanding and basic instinct? What must I do to protect myself from Satan's lies and deceptions? What is God teaching or reminding me through today's devotion?

Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, thank you for always being there to listen to my prayers and for rescuing me from my troubles. Please help me to always rely on you, especially in making decisions. Protect me from Satan's lies and give me discernment to recognize deceptions and lies. In your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
