David prayed this prayer in Psalm 70, "Please, God, rescue me! Come quickly, Lord, and help me. May those who try to kill me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, 'Aha! We've got him now!' But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, 'God is great!' But as for me, I am poor and needy; please hurry to my aid, O God. You are my helper and my savior; O Lord, do not delay." Psalm 70 is short and it is a prayer of asking God for help. Many of David's prayers are about deliverance from his enemies. It seems that his enemies are always pursuing him, ready to kill him. Although we are not like David, we go through different challenges every day. It may be that we have a difficult situation at work, at home, at school, or even personal struggles that we are going through. The good news is that we have a God who is more than capable of helping or rescuing us from the mess that we are in.
God is always with us and knows exactly what we are going through. However, there is one thing that can hinder God from helping us. If our hearts are prideful and not willing to admit our helplessness before Him, it will be difficult to rely on God completely. Noticed how David admitted his desperation for God's help. He admitted that He was poor and needy and acknowledged that God was his helper and savior. We have to come to a place of desperate dependence on God in order for Him to help us. As long as we are still relying on ourselves, we will not be able to completely trust in God. We have to let go of our self-reliance. One of the ways to help us rely on Him daily is to pray every day for guidance, strength, and wisdom. As our prayer every day becomes a part of our daily habit, we will gradually grow in our desperate dependence on Him.
Trusting God every day gives us peace and joy in our hearts and minds, regardless of what we are going through. We can be confident that God will work everything out according to His purpose and plan.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Do I trust God daily? What are the ways I trust God? Describe how you are trusting God today.
Write down all the worries you face today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, I acknowledge my desperate dependence on you. Please guide me today and give me the strength and wisdom to tackle every situation that I am facing today. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
