YAHWEH, OUR GOD

Writer's picture: Danny DomingoDanny Domingo

Psalm 96:4-6 says, "Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise! He is to be feared above all gods. The gods of other nations are mere idols, but the LORD made the heavens! Honor and majesty surround him; strength and beauty fill his sanctuary." The "LORD" in the above verses is translated as YHWH in the Hebrew language. It is the proper name of our God, and we pronounce it as Yahweh. YHWH means self-existence. It means that our God has no beginning and no end. He always existed. No one created God, but God created the universe and everything in it, including the earth. Our God is absolutely perfect and holy. Genesis 1:1 demonstrated His power by creating everything out of nothing. Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." As a result, our God is great, and He deserves to be praised and honored. Our God must be feared above all the gods and idols of this world because all the idols and gods of this world cannot be compared to the greatness of our God.

Our God is surrounded by honor and majesty. The Heaven where He dwells is filled with His strength and beauty. From His throne, He sustains the whole universe. The sun rises in the morning and sets in the afternoon because God allows it. Our very existence on this earth is in the palm of His hands. He provides for our needs from His throne. When we understand who our God truly is, nothing can take away our hope in Him. Natural disasters may wipe out all our possessions, but we will never be without because God is going to sustain us day by day. Sickness may bring pain and discomfort, but our lives are secure in Him. We may have financial difficulties, but we will overcome them because God is our provider. If God created the universe and everything in it, how much more will He sustain us as His beloved children?

Let us not lose hope. Let us look up to our God, YHWH. He is not against us, but He is for us. Let us not trust in any gods of this world because they are not real. Only our God is the true God and there is no one or nothing can be equal to Him because He is the only God who is self-existence.

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Do I trust God? Do I have any other gods that I trust besides God? What lesson did I learn from today's devotion?

Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven, I acknowledge that you are self-existence One. You are the creator of the universe and everything in it. You reign with truth and holiness. Your throne is filled with your strength and beauty. I bow down before you and worship you, for you are worthy to be honored and praised. Please help me to trust in you alone. In your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
