THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE GOD

After the confusion of language in the Tower of Babel, people scattered throughout the earth with the language they spoke. God continued to reveal Himself to people. Eventually, God called Abraham, a descendant of Shem, son of Noah, to become the father of the nation of Israel. The prophecy that God mentioned in Genesis 3:15 to provide a Savior of the world from sin would be fulfilled through the descendants of Abraham. Meanwhile, the rest of the world made gods for themselves. For example, the Egyptians during this time worshipped many gods, such as Ra (the sun god), Hapi (god of the Nile), Hathor (the cow goddess), and the ten plagues sent upon Egypt were direct challenges and judgments against their other gods. In ancient Persia (modern-day Iran), people practiced Zoroastrianism, founded by their prophet Zarathustra. They had a deep reverence for nature, especially fire and water, which symbolized God's divine light, wisdom, and energy. Not long after, Hinduism was born in the modern-day India and Pakistan. Hinduism, like the Egyptians, worshipped many gods. These religions were being practiced while the nation of Israel was called to be the light to the nations. There were many other religions formed before our Lord Jesus was born to save us from our sins. Buddhism began 500 years before our Lord Jesus was born. 

Despite the worshipping of many gods and the rise of many religions, God never stopped working in the nation of Israel, the Jewish people, to reveal Himself to the world through them. God gave the Ten Commandments and other laws to the children of Abraham. Eventually, their religious practices were called Judaism. The Jewish people followed God and used the Torah, which includes the first five books of the Bible that contain God's laws, to guide their lives. God called the Jewish people to shine His light to the world, but they too began to worship idols of this world. They compromised their faith in God because they wanted to become like the other nations in this world. Ultimately, God disciplined the nation of Israel by allowing ungodly nations, such as Babylon, the Persian Empire, Greek, and the Romans, to conquer them. However, praise God, there were always those who faithfully followed Him despite the persecution, like Daniel and his three friends. Today, there are many religions in this world and many gods and idols, but there is only one God—the God who created the Heavens and the Earth. He is the one who caused the universal flood and the confusion of language.

He is the God who loves and cares about us. As history continues, let us persevere in our faith in our true living God. There is only one true God, Yahweh, the God of the Bible. Let us continue to walk in His ways because His ways lead to life. 

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Do I believe that there is only one true God? Do I believe in the God of the Bible? Why is it important for me to persevere in my faith in the true living God?

Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven, there is no other God besides you. You are the creator and the judge of everything. I worship you alone. Please help me to walk in your ways, and protect my heart from straying away from you. I pray for guidance and wisdom as I go through my day. In your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
