In Luke 1:31-33, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and said to her, "You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!" There are three important descriptions of the son that Mary would conceive, according to the angel Gabriel. First, the child that she would conceive would be named Jesus. The name Jesus came from the Hebrew word "Yeshua," which means God saves. Jesus is the savior that God sent to save humanity from sin. Secondly, the son that Mary would conceive would be called the Son of the Most High. Jesus is the Son of God, which means that Jesus came from God the Father. Jesus would have the same nature as God the Father; therefore, Jesus was the same as God. Jesus said in John 10:30 that He and the Father are one. Jesus was not only a human being, but He was fully God as our God the Father. Thirdly, the child that Mary would conceive would become King forever through the line of David. Jesus came from the line of King David through Mary. Jesus will return to this earth and reign as King of Kings. Every knee will bow before Him, and all will confess that He is Lord. To summarize the three descriptions of the child whom Mary would conceive: the child would be the Savior (Jesus), God (The Son of God), and King forever.
Christmas is a celebration of the birth of our Savior, God, and King, Jesus. We are forgiven of our sins because Jesus saved us from our sins through His death on the cross and resurrection. Jesus can save us from any of our sins because He is God. Our Heavenly Father does not accept us based on our good works or accomplishments; rather, He accepts us through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus. No matter how Satan and his evil forces win in our world today, there will be a time when every knee, whether they are against God or not, will bow down before Him and submit to His authority as the King of Kings. Let us not be discouraged this Christmas. Jesus is our Savior, God, and King who loves and cares about us. No matter what we are going through, we will overcome because of our Lord Jesus. He will work everything out. He is God, and there is nothing impossible for Him.
We celebrate Christmas to remind us that Jesus came for us as our Savior, God, and King. Christmas should remind us that we have eternal hope, and no matter what is going on in our lives, God is always with us because of our Lord Jesus.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) How should I celebrate Christmas knowing that Jesus came to save me from my sins and give me eternal hope? Why shouldn't I worry about tomorrow? What should be my attitude this Christmas, knowing that Jesus is my Savior, God, and King?
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for sending Jesus as my Savior, God, and King. I am forgiven of my sins because of what Jesus has done for me. Please help me not to worry about tomorrow because my Lord Jesus loves and cares about me, despite what I have done. I worship you with my heart, Jesus, as my Savior, God, and King this Christmas season. Thank you for everything that you have done for me. In your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
