PEACE OF MIND AND HEART: WORRYING ABOUT TOMORROW

God's will for us is to live with peace of mind and heart in this chaotic world. He wants us to live with calmness and reassurance that He takes care of us. Philippians 4:6-7 says, "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then, you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." One of the biggest obstacles to having peace of mind and heart is the worries about the future. Since the future is something that has not happened yet, we anticipate the outcome of our future through our own understanding based on our knowledge of our situations and experiences. However, God does not work according to our knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, but He works entirely according to His infinite sovereign power. God does things that are beyond our understanding. We call it a miracle when God does things that our natural mind cannot explain—for example, raising a person from the dead.

God is saying to us this morning that nothing is impossible to Him. As a result, God wants us to trust and rest in Him so that we can have peace of mind and heart in the midst of our situations. Jesus said, "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today (Matthew 6:34)." Let us accept what God has for us today, do all our duties for today, and depend on the mercy of God and His divine help for the troubles which are yet to come. Instead of worrying about tomorrow, which we do not have any control over because things can change, let us focus on what we can do now and rely on God's strength. Too often, we worry so much about tomorrow that it paralyzes us for today. God does not want us to live this way, for it is impeding His power to work in us today. God wants us to live in His power today and enjoy His peace that affects our minds and hearts.

When worries creep into our minds today, let us immediately offer them to God and focus our attention and energy on today's responsibilities. Remind ourselves that God will take care of our tomorrows just as He is taking care of us at this present moment.

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) What is God's will for me to live for today? Why should I not worry about tomorrow? What does God want me to do today instead of worrying about tomorrow?

Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven, please forgive me if I worry too much about tomorrow and miss your peace in my mind and heart. Please help me focus today by relying on your strength and wisdom, completely depending on your mercy and help for tomorrow. In your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
