Psalm 108:1-5 says, "My heart is confident in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart! Wake up, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth." Psalm 108 is written by David, and it expresses the source of his confidence. Since David was a young shepherd boy, he had been trusting in the Lord. He had experienced how God delivered him from ferocious bears and lions while he was protecting the flocks of his family. He learned to play musical instruments, and he wrote a lot of music and Psalms as a way to express his emotions, especially to the Lord. In a way, music became the way for him to pray, praise, and worship God.

When our confidence is in God, it gives us the courage to face our difficult problems. Instead of hiding and running away from challenges, we have the assurance and security that God will care for us; therefore, we boldly face and attempt to resolve them. So, when we finally resolve our difficult problems, we give thanks to God and honor Him for His unfailing love. The more we rely on God, the closer we will be to Him. The misconception is believing we can solve our issues without God, preferring to handle them on our own instead of relying on Him. However, we have to remind ourselves that we are limited creatures. Our understanding and strength are limited. We don't know what tomorrow holds. However, our God is an all-knowing and all-powerful God. David was not a perfect person. He made a lot of terrible mistakes in his life, but God carried him through life because he always trusted God and put his confidence in Him.

Putting our ultimate confidence in God is what we need to do this new year. We don't know what the rest of the year will be like, but God knows. His unfailing love will carry us through; therefore, we need to put our complete confidence in Him.

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Who should I put my confidence in this new year? Why? What does it mean when I put my confidence in God?

Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven, please help me to put my complete confidence in you. Please help me not to think that I can handle my life apart from you because there are many things that I cannot understand, and my strength is limited. You are an all-knowing and all-powerful God. In you, there is nothing impossible. Please give me the confidence to face any difficult problems that I am facing today, for you are always caring for me. In your name, Jesus, I pray, Amen.
