Psalm 114:1-8 says, "When the Israelites escaped from Egypt—when the family of Jacob left that foreign land—the land of Judah became God's sanctuary, and Israel became his kingdom. The Red Sea saw them coming and hurried out of their way! The water of the Jordan River turned away. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs! What's wrong, Red Sea, that made you hurry out of their way? What happened, Jordan River, that you turned away? Why, mountains, did you skip like rams? Why, hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. He turned the rock into a pool of water; yes, a spring of water flowed from solid rock." Psalm 114 remembered how God led the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the promised land (which includes Judah) to make them a great nation. As God led them to the promise land, God split the Red Sea so that the Israelites could cross over to the desert towards Mount Sinai (Exodus 14). While they were in the desert, they got very thirsty, and there was no water in the area, so God provided them with fresh water from a solid rock (Exodus 17). When the Israelites arrived at Mount Sinai, the mountains quaked (like rams skipping) because of the presence of the Lord (Exodus 19). Then God used Joshua to lead the Israelites into Canaan, the promised land, and He split the Jordan River to allow them to cross into Canaan. (Joshua 3).

The lesson that we can learn from this Psalm is that God is all-powerful to fulfill His promise to His people, Israel. He performs miracles upon miracles to carry out His promises and purposes. It should encourage us to know and understand that God is faithful to do what He said He is going to do. When God promised us that He would take care of us, we must believe deep in our hearts that He will take care of us. Our future is in His hands. Our security is not in our jobs or the amount of money that we have or make, but our ultimate security is in Him. He is the only one who can bring water from a solid rock. He is the only one who can split the seas. We can lose everything in a split second in this ever-changing world. However, Psalm 114 displays the power of God over nature and the lives of His people to remind us that God is our ultimate security.

We praise God for His faithful care and love towards us. Our security comes not from the blessings we receive, but from the giver of those blessings. Let us praise and thank our God for His lovingkindness towards us.

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Where do I put my trust if I truly examine my heart today? Do I trust in my job or the money that I make more than God? Where should I put my trust in? Why?

Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven, I praise and thank you for reminding me today that you are my ultimate security. Thank you for being so faithful in loving and caring for me. Please help me to not put my trust in the blessings that you have given me, but to always put my trust in you. Please help me to be content in you and trust you completely that you will take care of me until the end. In your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
