Psalm 119:49-56 says, "Remember your promise to me; it is my only hope. Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles. The proud hold me in utter contempt, but I do not turn away from your instructions. I meditate on your age-old regulations; O Lord, they comfort me. I become furious with the wicked, because they reject your instructions. Your decrees have been the theme of my songs wherever I have lived. I reflect at night on who you are, O Lord; therefore, I obey your instructions. This is how I spend my life: obeying your commandments." All the promises of God are a comfort to us in all our troubles. Although God's Word is considered age-old regulations, instructions, commandments, or promises, it is still applicable to us today. God's Word is timeless, for our God is timeless. God always speaks to us through the Bible, and this is the reason we need to read, study, and meditate on it day and night. Unbelievers may reject God's Word, but it does not change the fact that it is the Word of God.
The more we spend time with the Word of God, the more we will be aware of His presence in our lives. We will become more aware of His ways, and our minds will be protected from the lies of Satan. God expects us to know, learn, and obey His Word for the rest of our lives on this earth. Let us not be lazy or get tired of spending time with the Word of God. No matter how busy we can be, we must take time to open our Bible and read. And if we do not know what to read, pick a book and read 1 to 10 verses, or one chapter at a time. We can set our own phase as long as we are consistent. Our daily devotion can help us read at least one verse every day. We may not know what will happen tomorrow, but one thing is certain: God is near to us, and He speaks to us through our Bible.
If we find it difficult to spend time with God's word, we should ask God for help, as we truly need it. There is so much going on in the world today that we need God's instructions on how we should live our lives. We need His encouragement as we deal with our daily challenges.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) What should I do when I am having difficulty spending time with my Bible? Why is it important for me to read God's Word daily? Describe an experience in the past that God's Word encouraged you?
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, there are so many things that are going on in this world today that I need your constant instructions and encouragement. Please help me to always be aware of your promises so that I will not stray away from your truth. Please help me not to be lazy or to become too busy that I neglect my time to read my Bible. Please continue to give me hunger and thirst to read your Word daily. In your name, Jesus, I pray, Amen.
