DESCRIBING WHO GOD IS

One common question about God is, "Where was God before He created the universe?" or "Who created God?" The answer to this question is found in Exodus 3:14. It says, "God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.'" When God identified Himself as I AM, He was referring to his self-existence and eternal presence. He existed before He created everything. He is a self-sufficient God and not in need of anything. He existed in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is holy—perfect in goodness, separated from evil and corruption. He is sovereign and powerful—created the universe and everything in it, and has absolute control over His creation. He is omniscient and full of wisdom—knowing all things and possessing all answers and solutions as He created everything by His wisdom. He is immutable and eternal—never changing and existing outside of time. He is love—sacrificially, graciously, mercifully loving. When we combine all of His attributes, we can only bow down before Him and worship Him. We are so blessed to have a God who is so powerful, yet is so loving, gracious, and merciful towards us. He created us for a wonderful relationship with Him with no evil intentions, but only for us to enjoy His glory forever.
When God created Adam and Eve, they had everything in the Garden of Eden. He created them with no sin and corruption. They were perfect and enjoyed the beauty of God's creation and the presence of God. God spoke directly to them. There was no suffering and death. God is reminding us today of who He is so that we can put our trust and faith in Him. God knows everything about each one of us. He knows us individually. He calls us by our own name. In spite of His responsibility to sustain the universe daily, He is never too busy that He doesn't listen to our prayers. We may never understand how He listens to millions of prayers each day and guides each person who relies on Him, but He is God. Our God is bigger than anything that we can imagine. He existed outside our time and dimensions. In our struggles and difficulties, let us rely on God's strength. He never promised us that we wouldn't suffer, but He promised that He would be with us in our suffering. However, there will be a time when He will completely rescue us from this world of suffering and bring us to a new Heaven and Earth that has no more sin, suffering, and death.
Let us hold on to our God and surrender our lives and ways to Him. Let us not live according to our desires, but God's desires, for He is our God. He is the only one who can give us a fulfilled life.
Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) If God is holy, sovereign, powerful, full of wisdom, unchanging, eternal, and love, how should I live my life before Him? Am I willing to surrender my life and everything to God, knowing that He cares and loves me? Am I willing to follow His ways since he knows my future?
Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them up to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.
Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven, you are my God, and no one else besides you. You are absolutely in control of your creations. I may not fully understand how you work and sustain everything, but I completely trust you. I praise and worship you for making me your child through my faith in my Lord Jesus. I thank you that I am forever yours, and that no matter what happens in this world, my life will always be in the loving care of your hands. May I live for you and follow your ways in everything that I do today. In your name, Jesus, I pray, Amen.
