THE FOLLY OF SELF-RELIANCE

Maybe you have heard this phrase, "if you believe in yourself, anything is possible." Many people keep on repeating this phrase over and over again on themselves to overcome their self-doubt and give them the confidence to fulfill their goals in life. It is about having a positive mindset that they have what it takes to overcome any obstacles in their lives. However, God wants us to trust Him completely. God said that we need to walk by faith and not by sight. The moment we wake up in the morning to the time we go to bed at night, God wants us to trust Him and not our own understanding.

People who trust only themselves and experience success in their lives have a very difficult time believing in Jesus. There was a song by Frank Sinatra that was a great hit in the late 60s titled, "I did it my way." It was about his testimony on how he became successful in life in his own ways. Here's his testimony on one of the magazines, "I believe in nature, in the birds, the sea, the sky, in everything I can see or that there is real evidence for. If these are what you mean by God, then I believe in God. But I don't believe in personal God to whom I look for comfort or for a natural on the next roll of the dice." In short, Frank Sinatra did not believe in Jesus Christ.

It is true that a person can become successful in life without believing in God, but the question is, "what good is it for someone to gain the whole world but lose his own soul?" The Bible is pretty clear that after our physical death on this earth is judgment. Anyone who believes in Jesus as their Lord and Savior will be saved from eternal punishment and will be with God in Heaven for eternity. The successes in this world are only temporary. Everything on this earth will perish, but our future destiny is eternal after our life in this world. As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, our attitude should be to continue to trust in the Lord Jesus, follow His direction, and live for Him.

Ask yourself these questions: Do I only trust myself and not God? Why is it futile to only trust in me? What happens when I die?

Write down all the worries that you are facing today and lift them up to God.

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, you are the God of the universe. I believe that you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to die for my sin so that I could be forgiven of my sin. I believe that only by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ that I can receive eternal life. Please help me to trust in you completely, for you are my God. Please help me now with (mention your prayer requests). In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
