When there was a severe drought in the time of the prophet Elijah, God told him to go to Zarephath for there would be a widow who was going to provide food for him there. When he met the widow and her son, they only had a handful of flour left and a little oil, and it was only enough for one more meal. The widow was about to prepare the last meal for her and her son, and they would die in starvation. However, Elijah told her not to fear and prepare a small portion of food for him first and then prepare food for her and her son, for the LORD God would not let the flour and the oil run dry until the drought ended. The widow trusted God, and she saved both herself and her son in the midst of the severe drought (1 Kings 17:8-16).
If I was the widow, I might have had difficulty sharing my food with Elijah since we didn't have enough food for my son and me because there is a part of me to take care of myself and my loved ones first before I take care of others. However, because of my faith in God, I would listen to Elijah despite my lack of understanding. I may not explain how God will not allow the flour and the oil not to run dry, but I will obey God because I believe that God can do anything. My faith in God overcomes my lack of understanding; therefore, I can give on what God wants me to give.
If our giving is based on our faith, we will be able to give sacrificially. And as believers, God wants us to learn to give sacrificially, for when we give sacrificially, God blesses us and experience His power in our lives. There are moments in my life that God led me to give what I had left, and I obeyed. In return, God blessed me and multiplied what I had given. But I admit that it was challenging for me to obey the first time because that was all I had. It was only my faith in God that I was able to give what I had left. So let us walk in faith when we give what God is asking us to give that we may learn to give sacrificially.
Ask yourself these questions: Have I given sacrificially? Would I be willing to give what I have left if God will ask me? Do I have faith in God that He can provide all of my needs?
Write down all the worries that you are facing today and lift them up to God.
Prayer:
Father in Heaven, please continue to teach me to give sacrificially. Everything that I have came from you. Please help me to walk in faith and not by sight. Please help me trust you to give everything you want me to give to glorify your name. Please help me now with (mention your prayer requests). In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
