LABOR DAY

Labor Day began on September 5, 1882, in New York City. It was created to honor the American labor movement and recognize the contributions of the workers during the Industrial Revolution. At that time, workers faced long hours, unsafe conditions, and low pay. Despite these challenges, workers achieved many things that make our lives easier and safer today. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law as a Federal Holiday. Before 1882, people used gas or candles as their source of light at night. But in 1882, Americans began to use the modern electrical grid at the Pearl Street Station in Lower Manhattan, New York, which centralized the source of electricity. As a result, people began using electricity to provide light at night through wires connected to the electric grid. It made it much safer to have light at night, instead of relying on gas and candles. In the same year, the world's first commercial hydroelectric plant also began in Appleton, Wisconsin, which used water power to create electric current. It revolutionized the way people lived because it paved the way for 24-hour factory shift work, which helped to manufacturing machinery to advance technology in American society.

Today, Labor Day is celebrated with parades, backyard barbecues, picnics, and sporting events without realizing the reason for the holiday. It became the unofficial end of the summer season. But we must thank God for the wisdom and resources He provided to all the hardworking individuals who helped invent the technologies that make our lives more comfortable and safer today. And even for us today, we must thank God for the wisdom and strength that He provides us. 2 Corinthians 9:8 says, "And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." Today, as we celebrate Labor Day, let us thank God for His goodness in our lives. We must acknowledge and praise God for His provision in our lives. We are much more comfortable and safer than in the 1800s because of the technologies that we have today. No matter how much our technology becomes more advanced, like Artificial Intelligence (AI), God provides all the wisdom and resources, for He is the creator of the universe and everything in it.

Let us remember how much God provides for us every day. Let us not be anxious about tomorrow, for God is always faithful to provide everything we need. Philippians 4:6 says, "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done."

Questions for application: (Think through these questions carefully, meditate on them while answering them, and let the Spirit of God speak to you.) Why is it important to remember that God is my provider? What should I do when I am anxious about tomorrow? What should be my attitude by knowing and believing that God is my provider?

Take a moment to write down all your worries today. Then, lift them to God in prayer, surrendering them to His will and trusting in His guidance.

Prayer:

Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for providing for all of my needs. Please help me remember how much you have cared for me in the past, so that I will not feel anxious today and tomorrow. I pray that I will always be thankful and appreciate all your provisions. Please continue to provide for all of my needs according to your riches and glory. In your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
